The Senior Financial Analyst role supports the Locomotive Group within the North American Rail business segment. GATX owns a fleet of 600+ EMD locomotives ranging from 600HP to 3800HP; we are the largest operating lessor of four axle locomotives in North America. We buy, sell, trade, lease and maintain locomotives for a variety of railroads of all sizes and industries across varied commodities. This position is an opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and includes responsibilities associated with financial planning and analysis, strategic decision making for investments, and analysis and reporting for fleet management. This individual is expected to perform a large volume of analytic analysis, and demonstrate a willingness and ability to manage projects in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

Commercial Reporting

  • Develop, update, maintain and document queries for the SAP-Business Warehouse Fleet Analysis Tool to report fleet utilization and the roll-forward of fleet activity from the prior period including fleet additions, disposals, renewals, assignments and releases.
  • Prepare monthly sales activity report and report key/significant activity-based renewals, releases, and assignments.
  • Prepare Locomotive trend tables/charts/graphs of key performance metrics for commercial sections of monthly and quarterly operation reports. Analyze reasons for change from forecast, budget and prior periods.
  • Prepare exposure reports per lease portfolio.
  • Responsible for creating and analyzing reports pertaining to contract maintenance business.

Budgeting and financial statements

  • Organize and complete all aspects of the budget process, including obtaining assumptions; populating the budget template with those assumptions; analyzing initial results and revising based on feedback; creating auxiliary schedules and written narratives regarding budget trends, etc.
  • Monthly P&L and balance sheet variance analysis.
  • Prepare key metrics, analysis and supporting information for budget and forecast presentations to management.

Commercial Support

  • Liaison between internal groups to coordinate pricing analyses for investment and lease activity.
  • Maintain standard pricing assumptions for various locomotive models.
  • Track investments authorized under N. American Fleet approval.

Qualifications

  • Degree in business, finance or accounting
  • 5-7 yrs. experience managing projects or handling complex administrative duties
  • Analytical skills and advanced Excel skills.
  • An understanding of investment analysis, including net present value/project valuation.
  • Ability to handle complex responsibilities and multi-task with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate financial and pricing concepts to non-finance personnel.

This is a hybrid position that will require the employee to work in the office at least 3 days a week throughout the year.

USD $78,800.00/Yr.

Max

USD $103,800.00/Yr.

 

This role may be eligible to participate in the Company’s short-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.

 

This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
