The Locomotive Field Inspector Lead performs locomotive inspections on all components of locomotives, including electro motive diesel (EMD) engines and electrical components, and provides internal mechanical support to senior leaders with GATX’s locomotive mechanical team. This position is also responsible for performing and/or coordinating final inspection of locomotives prior to release from contractor shops to maintain GATX quality standards and customer satisfaction. This role serves as a locomotive technical expert for the Locomotive network.

Responsibilities

  • Project Oversight: Coordinate with all shop locations to schedule inspections to verify work completion, additional work needed, and final verifications to ensure GATX quality assurance standards are adhered to.
  • Technical Oversight:
    • Serve as a locomotive technical expert for the Locomotive network.
    • Write work scopes for locomotives that are entering the shop, with the intent of providing quality, delivery and cost that are most beneficial to GATX.
    • Request Improvement Orders at the direction of the Senior Manager North American Locomotive Maintenance.
    • Provide technical expertise in terms of EPA compliance and FRA requirements.
    • Evaluate leases for locomotives to ensure that the services provided align with contractual terms.
  • Inspections:
    • Perform detailed locomotive inspections and provide results to the Locomotive compliance/analytics team so that they can be added to the locomotive mechanical database. This includes the following components as needed: electro motive diesel (EMD) engines; engine turbos; electrical components; air compressors; control pockets; wheels; welds; brake systems; generators; draft gears; and power assemblies.
    • Perform inspections as locomotives are moving through the shopping network to ensure that tasks are completed in a timely and correct manner.
    • Once completed, inspect the locomotive to ensure all work is completed and the locomotive is ready for the next lease.
    • Perform on-site locomotive inspections as required.
  • Process Improvements:
    • Work with Senior Manager and site managers to develop efficiencies at the shop level.
    • Improve repair completion cycle time by ensuring adequate material levels to complete projects

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 7 years’ locomotive mechanical experience.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills, with the ability to be proficient with:
    • Excel
    • SAP
    • ERP
  • Background in EMD locomotive repair.
  • Possess advanced locomotive mechanical and electrical systems knowledge, including:
    • electro motive diesel (EMD) engines; engine turbos; electrical components; air compressors; control pockets; wheels; welds; brake systems; generators; draft gears; and power assemblies.
  • Ability to perform non-structural welds required, ability to perform structural welds and visually inspect welds preferred.
  • Electro motive diesel (EMD) certification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
  • Locomotive electrical Maintenance and Troubleshooting components certification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
  • EMD GP38-2 Locomotive Troubleshooting Electrical certification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
  • Locomotive Maintenance and Troubleshooting certification or equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities required.
  • Possess ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems, along with problem-solving abilities to make sound decisions.
  • Possess a strong understanding of FRA rules and regulations, GATX Rail Policies, and Safety and Quality procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), or the ability to obtain.
  • Extensive travel will be required up to 40%.

This is a hybrid position that will require the employee to work in the office at least 3 days a week throughout the year.

Min

USD $78,800.00/Yr.

Max

USD $86,000.00/Yr.

 

This role may be eligible to participate in the Company’s short-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.

 

This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
